On February 25, 2025, the FDA announced the removal of Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) requirements for clozapine, a medication used to treat treatment-resistant schizophrenia. This decision is widely supported by providers, patients, and caregivers, as it eliminates administrative burdens that have often led to dangerous treatment interruptions, relapses, and hospitalizations.
For LTC pharmacies, this change means:
No more REMS registration or special dispensing authorization for clozapine prescriptions.
Immediate updates to dispensing policies to align with the new FDA guidance.
A call to remove former REMS-related restrictions, such as quantity limits and lab result requirements.
While the FDA has lifted REMS requirements, some payer and corporate policies may still enforce restrictions. LTC pharmacies are now better equipped to ensure seamless access to clozapine for patients who rely on it. This is a critical opportunity to improve patient care and reduce preventable treatment disruptions.
